The garden / Baku's memory

Baku's memory

A garden that keeps the childhood, youth and dates of several generations.

A garden in the heart

A place everyone knows

For many Baku people the Molokan Garden is not just a square but a part of their personal history. Here first dates were made, children were walked, friends were met after work.

By the fountain people played chess and backgammon, fed pigeons, argued about football and politics. The garden has seen several generations of citizens and remembers them all.

“Let's meet at the Molokan” — a phrase that needs no explanation to any resident of old Baku. This garden became a shared point on the city's map of memory.

01

Dates

By the fountain whole generations arranged dates; for many, love began here.

02

Chess and backgammon

On the benches people played chess and backgammon for hours, discussing the news and the life of the city.

03

Pigeons and children

Children fed the pigeons and floated little boats in the fountain — the garden was a place for family walks.

04

Several generations

Grandfathers came here, then their children and grandchildren — the garden bound the generations of one family.

05

“Let's meet at the Molokan”

This phrase became a code of old Baku: a meeting place understood without an address or explanation.

06

A symbol of old Baku

The garden entered memories, songs and stories as one of the symbols of cosy, homely Baku.

A shared memory

A garden everyone remembers

The Molokan Garden belongs not to one family but to the whole city. Every Baku person carries their own frame in memory: the fountain, a bench, the shade of a plane tree, pigeons and familiar faces.

It is from small places like this that a great feeling is built — love for one's native city.
